Marstall Halbinsel: A Lakeside Retreat

The Marstall Halbinsel, a picturesque peninsula on the western shore of the Schweriner See in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, offers visitors a serene escape steeped in history and natural beauty. Between 1838 and 1842, the grand ducal Marstall was built according to the plans of court architect Georg Adolph Demmler. The Marstall was designed in close proximity to the palace and in alignment with the inner-city street Großer Moor. The complex included a riding hall, stables, carriage houses, and accommodations for the staff, all essential for maintaining the royal horses and carriages. Between 1854 and 1873, court architect Hermann Willebrand undertook extensive remodeling and expansion. The outer structure of the Marstall is constructed in masonry, while the interior walls are executed in timber framing. The exterior openings on the ground floor are arranged in rounded and arcade-shaped recesses. The inner ground floor openings in the north wing are grouped in pairs and framed by enclosed niches. The windows above are crowned with triangular plaster decorations. The building edges at the corner and end buildings are emphasized by plaster blocks. In 1858, Theodor Klett designed the former Wadewiesen and the grand ducal wood yard as an English-style garden and led them to the shores of the Schweriner See. The Wadewiesen were formerly used to dry fishing nets. After 1918, the Marstall experienced different uses, including the riding hall being used several times as a replacement venue during maintenance work on the theater building and as a sports venue. A competition of ideas for urban redevelopment was announced by the city in 1968, the revised results of which were submitted to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED in 1970, highlighting 15 historical buildings in the city center, including the Marstall, as worthy of preservation. Today, the Marstall building houses two ministries of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The surrounding Marstall Halbinsel has been transformed into a public park, offering a tranquil retreat for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront promenade, enjoying the fresh air and picturesque views of the lake and castle. The park features well-maintained walking paths, benches for relaxation, and open green spaces perfect for picnics and leisurely activities.
