Schloss Lichtenstein: A Fairytale Castle

Schloss Lichtenstein, a privately-owned Gothic Revival castle, stands proudly in the Swabian Jura of southern Germany, a testament to 19th-century Romanticism. Around 1100, a castle belonging to a family of ministerials of the counts of Achalm and later counts of Württemberg stood on the escarpment above the source of the river Echaz. This earlier castle and its inhabitants, the lords of Lichtenstein, were frequently at odds with the Free Imperial City of Reutlingen, leading to numerous attacks. The old castle was destroyed twice, once in 1311 during the imperial civil war and again between 1377 and 1381 by the citizens of Reutlingen. In 1390, a new castle was built approximately 500 meters from the ruins of the old one. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands and eventually fell into disrepair. In 1802, King Frederick of Württemberg dismantled much of the structure, replacing it with a hunting lodge. However, the Romantic movement of the 19th century sparked renewed interest in medieval history and architecture. Wilhelm Hauff's novel, 'Lichtenstein,' played a significant role in this revival, capturing the imagination of Count Wilhelm of Württemberg (later Duke of Urach). Today, Schloss Lichtenstein remains privately owned by the Dukes of Urach.
