Discover more about Alter Kurpark

The Alter Kurpark in Bad Soden am Taunus is a testament to the town's rich history as a spa destination. Established in 1823, this meticulously designed landscape garden offers a serene escape from the everyday, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in nature and tranquility. Originally conceived as an English-style garden, the park's design has evolved over time, integrating historical elements and a diverse collection of flora. The park's origins lie in the vision of transforming the former saline grounds east of the old town center into a picturesque retreat. Plantings began around Source VI, near the present-day wedding hall, under the direction of the Nassau government. Throughout the 19th century, the park expanded, incorporating the talents of renowned garden artists like Sebastian Rinz and Carl Friedrich Thelemann. Rinz, a Frankfurt city gardener, shaped the northern park area around 1850, while Thelemann, the Nassau court garden director, redesigned it in 1865/66. Their contributions resulted in the expansive meadows that still characterize the park today, including the floral rendition of Bad Soden's coat of arms. The park's landscape is punctuated by architectural landmarks that reflect its history. The Paulinenschlößchen, built in 1847 by Duchess Pauline von Nassau, now houses the citizen's office. The Badehaus, constructed in 1870/71, once provided bathhouses and now serves as a cultural hub, housing the city archives, library, museum, and art gallery. The Alter Kurpark is home to four mineral springs: the Neue Sprudel, Schwefelbrunnen, Wilhelmbrunnen, and Alte Sprudel. The first two are accessible to the public, offering a taste of Bad Soden's healing waters. A fountain at the upper end of the park commemorates the Alte Sprudel. The park's botanical diversity is a major draw, with numerous old and exotic trees adding to its charm. Visitors can marvel at the towering Ginkgo, one of the tallest of its kind in Hesse, and the magnificent copper beech, whose trunk requires nearly three people to encircle. Informational signs identify 71 of the park's trees, enriching the visitor experience. Throughout the year, the Alter Kurpark hosts a variety of events, bringing the community together. Sunday concerts, the Bad Soden Wine Days, the Summer Night Festival, summer lounge events, the Christmas market, and the Luna Run are just a few of the activities that enliven the park's atmosphere. The park's historical significance and unique botanical collection have earned it landmark status since the 1970s. Preserving its character, any felled tree is replaced with one of the same species. Today, the Alter Kurpark remains a beloved destination for recreation, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. Whether strolling through its winding paths, admiring its ancient trees, or attending one of its many events, visitors are sure to find something to delight in this historic oasis. The park's central location, just steps from the shops and restaurants of downtown Bad Soden, makes it easily accessible. Its welcoming atmosphere invites visitors to unwind, breathe fresh air, and connect with nature. The Alter Kurpark is more than just a park; it's a living testament to Bad Soden's past, present, and future. Visitors can explore the Stadtgalerie Bad Soden am Taunus im Badehaus, which hosts exhibitions of contemporary and regional art. The gallery has showcased works by renowned artists and supports emerging talent through its Regional-ART series. The park's design includes a pond with an island and a bandstand, adding to its scenic appeal. The park also features a rose garden and a herb garden, providing sensory experiences for visitors. The Alter Kurpark is a place where history, nature, and culture converge, offering a unique and enriching experience for all who visit. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to provide a tranquil escape while celebrating the town's heritage and fostering a sense of community.
