Discover more about Lord Airey's Battery

Lord Airey's Battery, situated within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar, is a testament to the region's rich military history. Constructed between 1890 and 1891, the battery was named in honor of General Sir Richard Airey, who served as the Governor of Gibraltar from 1865 to 1870. Originally armed with a 6-inch breech-loading gun, it was later upgraded to a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun by 1900. This powerful gun, capable of engaging ships up to heavy cruisers, played a crucial role in the defense of Gibraltar. The battery, along with O'Hara's Battery, remained active until 1976, long after most coastal artillery was decommissioned. In 1997, an underground chamber near the battery was discovered to be the site of a planned WWII operation called Operation Tracer. The site was intended to be a secret stay-behind hideout. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved fortifications, enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, and learn about the battery's history through informative plaques.
