    The British War Memorial, also known as the Gibraltar War Memorial, is a significant monument dedicated to the fallen of World War I. Unveiled on September 27, 1923, the memorial is the creation of Jose Piquet Catoli of Barcelona, Spain, and is crafted from Carrara marble.The sculpture depicts a sailor and a soldier jointly raising the national flag and a laurel wreath. The monument is positioned on an esplanade with steps, featuring several plaques. These plaques include dedications to the heroes of Gibraltar and the Straits Patrol, a thank you from Belgium for Gibraltar's support during 1940-1944, and acknowledgements of Gibraltarian citizens who gave their lives in the Great War.Adjacent to the memorial are two Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War (1854–1856) and presented to Gibraltar by the British government in 1858 for its assistance during that conflict. The other two cannons are located at the entrance to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.The memorial serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Great War. Until 2009, the Cross of Sacrifice served as the focus of Remembrance Sunday ceremonies in Gibraltar, at which time the location was changed to the Gibraltar War Memorial.
