Discover more about Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay, a charming village, bay, and beach, graces the eastern Mediterranean coast of Gibraltar, offering a delightful retreat on the opposite side of the Rock from the bustling city. Situated south of Catalan Bay, it's easily accessible via Sir Herbert Miles Road. Once a popular beach, Sandy Bay faced significant erosion over the years, leading to its near disappearance. However, a major revitalization project in 2014 transformed it back to its former glory, with approximately 50,000 tons of sand imported from the Western Sahara. To safeguard the beach from the erosional impact of the sea, two curved groynes and a frontal breakwater were constructed, effectively trapping shifting sand. A submerged breakwater connects the ends of both groynes, further enhancing the beach's protection. Historically, the area above Sandy Bay was home to Gibraltar's large water catchments, now dismantled. These catchments, built between 1903 and 1961, were designed to meet Gibraltar's increasing water demands, utilizing the smooth surface of the Great Gibraltar Sand Dune to collect rainwater. Today, the slope has been restored to its natural state, showcasing vegetation native to Gibraltar. Sandy Bay is a haven for relaxation, sunbathing, and swimming in its clear, shallow waters. The beach is family-friendly, with a sectioned-off area for children and a nearby chiringuito restaurant. While offering a tranquil setting, visitors should note that parking can be challenging, and the descent to the beach may be difficult for those with mobility issues. Despite these challenges, the beach's beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a worthwhile destination.
