Since at least 1727, a signal station has been located on the 1,200 feet (370 m) high Signal Hill. In 1773 it had its first 6-pounder gun installed. Today, visitors can still see remnants of these military installations, offering a glimpse into the region's past. The top station of the Gibraltar Cable Car was built on the site of the old Signal Hill Battery. Nothing remains of the battery, other than the ruins of the WWII support buildings, which included a guard house and stores.Reaching the summit of Signal Hill is an experience in itself. Visitors can choose to hike up, enjoying the natural beauty of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, or take a ride on the Gibraltar Cable Car, which whisks you to the top in just a few minutes.
