Discover more about Puerta de Jerez

Puerta de Jerez, or Jerez Gate, stands as the most emblematic monument in Tarifa, offering a glimpse into the town's rich history and cultural diversity. This iconic gateway, located at the northern entrance to Tarifa's old town, is the only remaining gate of the original four that once fortified the city. Constructed in the 13th century during the Almohad Caliphate, the gate formed part of the defensive walls that encircled Tarifa. The gate's architecture showcases a blend of Islamic and Gothic influences. The structure features three successive arches nestled between two crenellated towers. Above the pointed arch, a plaque commemorates King Sancho IV's conquest of the city from the Moors in 1292. The gate is also associated with the legend of Guzmán el Bueno, who defended Tarifa against a siege in 1294. In 2000, Puerta de Jerez underwent restoration, incorporating the artwork “El Cristo de los Vientos” by local artist Guillermo Pérez Villalta. The gate serves as a reminder of Tarifa's strategic importance throughout history, particularly during the Moorish period. Today, vehicles and pedestrians still pass through the arch, with care, to access the old town.
