Discover more about Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels, also known as the Upper Galleries, represent a remarkable feat of military engineering born out of necessity during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783). Faced with a seemingly insurmountable challenge of reaching a blind spot on the north-eastern side of the Rock, Sergeant-Major Henry Ince proposed an audacious solution: to dig a tunnel through the solid limestone. Construction began in May 1782, with miners using hand tools, explosives and sheer determination to carve out the first passages. Initially intended to reach a single gun emplacement at 'The Notch', the tunnels quickly evolved into a complex network of galleries and chambers. As ventilation became an issue, engineers innovatively cut openings in the cliff face, which then became gun ports, providing cannons to fire directly upon enemy lines. These unique embrasures revolutionized Gibraltar's defense, giving the British a significant advantage. By 1790, around 4,000 feet (1,200 m) of tunnels had been constructed. The tunnels were expanded further in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly during World War II, transforming the Rock into an underground fortress capable of housing 16,000 men with ample supplies. Today, visitors can explore these historic tunnels, witnessing the living conditions, artillery positions, and strategic planning that defined Gibraltar's defense. Multimedia displays and informative exhibits bring the history to life, offering a captivating experience for all ages.
