Discover more about World Heritage Monument to the Gorham's Cave Complex

The Gorham's Cave Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, is located on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar. This complex of four caves—Gorham's Cave, Vanguard Cave, Hyaena Cave, and Bennett's Cave—provides exceptional evidence of Neanderthal and early modern human occupation spanning approximately 120,000 years. The site covers 28 hectares, stretching from sea level to the top of the Rock. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the caves were among the last known refuges of the Neanderthals, with evidence suggesting their presence until around 32,000 years ago. Discoveries within the caves include tools, animal remains, and a rock engraving, showcasing Neanderthal culture, adaptation strategies, and capacity for abstract thought. The caves also provide insights into the environmental conditions and natural resources available to Neanderthals, including their exploitation of birds and marine animals for food. While direct access to the caves is limited to protect the fragile archaeological deposits, visitors can explore the World Heritage Site via several options. The Europa Advance Batteries Viewing Platform offers panoramic views of the caves and the surrounding landscape, complete with interpretation panels detailing the site's history and significance. Unescorted walking tours along the Mediterranean Steps provide access to the Neanderthal landscape, and pre-booked guided tours led by experts from the Gibraltar National Museum are available. Boat trips offer unique perspectives of the cave complex from the sea.
