Gibraltar Botanic Gardens: A Green Oasis

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, or La Alameda Gardens, offer a serene escape at the foot of the Rock of Gibraltar. Established in 1816 by Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Don, the gardens were intended as a recreational space for soldiers and residents seeking respite from the Mediterranean heat.For years, the gardens served as a hub for military activity, but fell into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1991, they were revitalized and transformed into a botanic garden, expanding its role to include education, research, and conservation. Today, the gardens showcase a diverse collection of plants from Mediterranean climates around the world, including species from California, Australia, South Africa, and the Canary Islands.Visitors can explore various themed beds, including those dedicated to plants from specific geographic regions and plant families. The gardens also feature historical monuments, such as the Eliott Memorial, and sculptures like the bronze figure of Molly Bloom. The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park, located within the gardens, provides a sanctuary for rescued animals and educates the public about endangered species.The gardens are open daily from 8 am to sunset, offering free admission. Guided tours are available by appointment.
