Discover more about Grand Battery

Grand Battery, an iconic landmark in Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's rich military heritage. As the main battery of the Landport Defences, it was one of the largest batteries in Gibraltar. Its origins trace back to the Moorish occupation of the Rock, possibly as early as the 14th century. Over the centuries, Grand Battery has undergone numerous enhancements and played a crucial role in defending Gibraltar. In 1627, it was reinforced following a report by Don Luis Bravo de Acuña. By the 18th century, the battery was broadened to accommodate more artillery, and it saw action during the Thirteenth Siege of Gibraltar. Throughout its history, the battery has been known by different names, including La Muralla de San Bernardo. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved site, which features historic structures, artillery, and informative exhibits detailing Gibraltar's significance in naval warfare. The removal of a World War II blast wall in 2019 revealed 18th-century fire steps, which have since been repaired. The Grand Battery also offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscape.
