Discover more about Grand Casemates Square

Grand Casemates Square, also known as Casemates Square or simply Casemates, is the larger of Gibraltar's two main squares, acting as a vibrant focal point in the city center. Its history stretches back to Gibraltar's Moorish period, with the area initially serving as a beach where the first settlements were established in 1160. Over the centuries, it evolved from a crucial naval point to a fortified military zone under Spanish and later British rule. The square derives its name from the Grand Casemates, bombproof barracks constructed by the British in 1817. Following significant damage during the Great Siege of 1779-1783, the British demolished most of the existing structures, transforming the area into a military esplanade used for parades and, until 1864, public executions. In the 1990s, a major refurbishment replaced a car park with the lively commercial center that exists today. Grand Casemates Square now serves as a gateway to Gibraltar's city center, offering tourists and locals a wide array of pubs, bars, restaurants, and shops. The square also hosts various cultural events, including live concerts, National Day celebrations, and New Year's Eve parties. Archaeological excavations during the 1990s revealed the foundations of a 14th-century galley house, which are preserved and on display.Visitors can explore the square's historical monuments, such as the Koehler depression gun carriage and a statue commemorating the Gibraltar Regiment. The Water Gate entrance serves as a reminder of the city's former defenses. The square is surrounded by various restaurants offering diverse cuisines, from Mediterranean tapas to British pub fare.
