Mediterranean Steps Travel Guide

The Mediterranean Steps present a unique and exhilarating hiking experience in Gibraltar, combining natural beauty with historical significance. Carved into the Rock of Gibraltar, this path ascends from approximately 180 meters (590 feet) above sea level at Jew's Gate to over 425 meters (1,394 feet) near O'Hara's Battery, close to the summit.Constructed by the British military in the 18th century, the steps served as a vital communication and access route to various defense posts. Today, hikers can explore remnants of these military installations, including World War II fortifications and gun emplacements, along the way. The trail winds along the eastern side of the Rock, offering stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Spanish coastline.The hike is considered moderately challenging, with steep sections and uneven terrain. However, the panoramic vistas and unique flora and fauna make the effort worthwhile. Along the route, hikers can encounter the Goat's Hair Twin Caves, which show evidence of prehistoric human habitation, and pass through a tunnel near a former freshwater pumping station. The steps were restored in 2007, making them safer and more accessible.
