Southport Gates Travel Guide

The Southport Gates stand as a powerful reminder of Gibraltar's rich and complex history. Located within the Charles V Wall, these three gates aren't just entryways; they're portals through time, each reflecting a different period of Gibraltar's strategic importance.The oldest, the Southport Gate (also known as Africa Gate), dates back to 1552. Constructed under the reign of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, it bears his royal arms and the coat of arms of Gibraltar. This gate marked the southern boundary of the city and was a key part of its defenses against Barbary pirates.In 1883, the 'New' Southport Gate was added to ease traffic flow. Built during Queen Victoria's reign, it features the British coat of arms and the arms of the Governor of the time, General Sir John Miller Adye.The most recent addition is the Referendum Gate, constructed in 1967. This wider gate commemorates Gibraltar's first sovereignty referendum, in which Gibraltarians overwhelmingly voted to remain under British rule.Located near Trafalgar Cemetery, and flanked by the South and Flat Bastions, the Southport Gates offer a tangible link to Gibraltar's past.
