This gate marked the southern boundary of the city and was a key part of its defenses against Barbary pirates.In 1883, the 'New' Southport Gate was added to ease traffic flow. Built during Queen Victoria's reign, it features the British coat of arms and the arms of the Governor of the time, General Sir John Miller Adye.The most recent addition is the Referendum Gate, constructed in 1967.
