Discover more about 100 Ton Gun Napier of Magdala Battery

The 100 Ton Gun, residing at the Napier of Magdala Battery, is a colossal reminder of Gibraltar's heavily fortified past and the might of the British Empire. This Armstrong 100-ton gun, officially known as the Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) 17.72-inch gun, was installed in the late 19th century as part of a strategic defense network. Manufactured by Sir William Armstrong & Company, the gun was designed to protect British territory and its naval base. Weighing approximately 100 tons, it fired projectiles weighing around 1,800 pounds (816kg) with a range of up to 10 miles (16km). The battery itself was constructed between 1878 and 1884, named after Field Marshal Robert Napier, 1st Baron Napier of Magdala, who served as Governor of Gibraltar. Originally, the gun was mounted at Victoria Battery, but after it split during firing practice in 1898, it was replaced by the gun from Victoria Battery. The gun at Napier Battery then received the nickname, "The Rockbuster". The 100-ton gun played a significant role in Gibraltar's defense, forming part of an extensive network of fortifications and artillery batteries along the coastline. Although it became obsolete and disarmed by 1906, it remains in its position, a symbol of Gibraltar's military history. Today, visitors can explore the Napier of Magdala Battery and marvel at the sheer size and engineering of the 100 Ton Gun. The site also offers scenic views of Rosia Bay, where HMS Victory anchored for repairs after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
