Overview

The Great Siege Tunnels, also known as the Upper Galleries, represent a remarkable feat of military engineering and human resilience. Constructed during the Great Siege of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, these tunnels were carved out of solid limestone by British soldiers and local civilians using hand tools and explosives. The purpose was to create protected passages and gun positions to defend against Spanish and French forces attempting to recapture Gibraltar. The tunnels stretch for several kilometers inside the northern end of the Rock of Gibraltar. As you walk through the various chambers and passageways, you'll discover how the tunnels provided a crucial means of defense and communication. Cannons are still positioned overlooking the landscapes they once defended. Originally, the tunnels were not intended to mount guns, but as work progressed, ventilation issues led to the opening of gun ports, providing the defenders vantage points to target enemy lines. By the end of the siege in 1783, the tunnel was 370 feet long and had four guns mounted in it.In the 19th and 20th centuries, Gibraltar's underground defenses were vastly expanded, especially during the Napoleonic Wars, Crimean War, and both World Wars. During World War II, the Royal Engineers added approximately 33 miles (52km) of tunnels. Visitors can explore the tunnels and view displays of weapons, equipment, and interactive exhibits that depict the conditions and challenges faced by the defenders during the siege. The Great Siege Tunnels offer a unique opportunity to delve into Gibraltar's past and gain a deeper understanding of its strategic importance.
