Erected in 2000 following the renovation of the square after the completion of the Metaxurgio metro station, the monument serves as a powerful reminder of the valor and commitment of those in the aviation field.The monument's design, created by sculptors Evangelos and Ioannis Moustakas, features a seven-meter sculpture of Icarus. The abstract metal figure depicts Icarus plunging to the earth, wings extended, crashing into a pyramid. Metal spikes surrounding Icarus represent his descent from the heavens, commemorating his heroic deeds. The plinth, made of granite and marble, encompasses the entire square, with tiers that light up at night.While the original design intended for water to flow into the pyramid, this feature was never implemented. Despite this, the monument remains a powerful symbol of the courage and sacrifice of the fallen aviators, inviting reflection on the cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of those who served.
