Discover more about Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary

The Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation, or simply the Metropolis, is the primary cathedral of the Archbishopric of Athens and all of Greece. Located between Syntagma and Monastiraki squares, this significant religious and historical site is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Construction of the cathedral began on Christmas Day in 1842, with King Otto and Queen Amalia laying the cornerstone. The project saw contributions from several architects, including Theophil Hansen, Dimitrios Zezos, François Boulanger, and Panagiotis Kalkos. The building was completed in 1862. The cathedral's walls were built using marble from 72 demolished churches. The cathedral is designed as a three-aisled, domed basilica, measuring 40 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 24 meters high. Its architecture combines Greco-Byzantine and neoclassical elements. Inside, visitors can find the tombs of Saint Philothei of Athens and Patriarch Gregory V, both martyred during Ottoman rule. The interior features frescoes, mosaics, and stone carvings. Next to the Metropolis stands the small Church of St. Eleftherios, also known as the Little Mitropoli, showcasing a contrasting Romanesque and Byzantine style. The square in front of the Metropolis features statues of Constantine XI, the last emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, and Archbishop Damaskinos. The Metropolitan Cathedral hosts important religious ceremonies, national events, and the funerals and weddings of prominent figures.
