Discover more about Plateia Syntagmatos

Syntagma Square, known as Plateia Syntagmatos in Greek, has been the symbolic heart of Athens since the early 19th century. Designed in the 1830s by Bavarian architect Michael Koch, it was conceived as one of the city's two main squares when Athens became the capital of modern Greece. Its name, meaning "Constitution Square," commemorates the events of September 3, 1843, when citizens and the military gathered to demand a constitution from King Otto. Overlooking the square is the Old Royal Palace, a neoclassical building that has housed the Hellenic Parliament since 1934. In front of the Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands as a memorial to Greek soldiers. Here, the Evzones, members of the Presidential Guard, perform a changing of the guard ceremony every hour, attracting many visitors. A more elaborate ceremony takes place every Sunday at 11 am. Syntagma Square is more than just a historical landmark; it's a vibrant center of modern Athenian life. It serves as a gathering place for political demonstrations, celebrations, and various events, including the Athens Pride Parade. The square is surrounded by cafes, shops, and hotels, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Ermou Street, one of Athens' main shopping streets, begins at Syntagma Square, offering a mix of designer boutiques and department stores. Beneath the square lies the Syntagma Metro Station, the busiest in Athens and a major transportation hub. During its construction, archaeological finds were unearthed, and many are now displayed within the station, turning it into a unique archaeological museum.
