Discover more about Omonoia Square

Omonoia Square, one of Athens's oldest and most central squares, has undergone numerous transformations throughout its history. Originally named "Palace Square" in 1846, it was later renamed "Othonos Square" in honor of King Otto. In 1862, it acquired its current name, Omonoia (meaning "concord" in Greek), commemorating the oath of peace taken by opposing political factions in the square. Over the years, Omonoia Square has served as a social and commercial center. In the late 19th century, trees were planted, a polygonal platform was added, and lighting systems were installed. The Athens-Piraeus underground railway construction between 1925 and 1930 led to a redesign, giving the square a circular shape. In 1954, underground spaces were added for shops and banks. In 2020, the square was renovated with a restored historical fountain and thermoneutral paving. Today, Omonoia Square is a vibrant meeting point and a major traffic hub, connecting six main streets. Visitors can explore nearby shops, enjoy local cuisine, and easily access other attractions via the Omonoia metro station. The square's central location makes it an ideal starting point for discovering Athens's rich heritage.
