Located in Nea Makri, near Marathon, the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods is an ancient temple complex built by Herodes Atticus around 160 AD. This fascinating site is dedicated to Egyptian deities, reflecting the integration of Egyptian religious practices into the Greek world. The sanctuary provides a glimpse into the cultural and trade connections between ancient Greece and Egypt. Herodes Atticus, a wealthy orator and benefactor from Marathon, likely established the sanctuary within his estate. The complex was possibly inspired by Emperor Hadrian's Serapeion in Tivoli, near Rome, which was modeled after the Serapeion of Canopus in the Nile Delta. The site features a rectangular enclosure with four entrances resembling Egyptian pylons. Each entrance was once flanked by colossal statues of pharaohs and the goddess Isis, though replicas now stand in their place. Visitors can explore the remains of the sanctuary, including a stepped construction at the center and a luxurious bathhouse (balneum) dating back to the 2nd century AD. This bathhouse, with its various rooms, provided a place for purification rituals before worship. The site also includes a large ellipsoidal cistern. Excavations have revealed numerous artifacts, including statues of Isis, Egyptian sphinxes, and lamps with reliefs of Sarapis and Isis. Many of the original statues are now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Marathon. The sanctuary's peaceful atmosphere and historical significance make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in archaeology and ancient cultures. The site is located near the coast, offering scenic views and a tranquil environment.
