Sant Paul's Byzantine Tower, or the Tower of Nea Fokea, is a captivating historical landmark in Kassandra, Halkidiki. Perched atop a rocky cliff, the 17-meter-tall tower has watched over the port of Nea Fokea for centuries.Constructed around 1407, the tower was initially built to protect the region, which Byzantine Emperor John VII Palaiologos had donated to the Monastery of Saint Paul. The tower's construction incorporated materials from ancient buildings, hinting at a history stretching back to 5000 BC. Its strategic location provided a vantage point for monitoring the sea and surrounding area.During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the tower served as the headquarters for Emmanouel Pappas, a leader of the revolution in Halkidiki. Its significance in the war made it a target for the Ottomans, who attacked and set it ablaze. The tower remained in ruins for over a century before being rebuilt in the 1970s.Today, the Byzantine Tower of Saint Paul is a must-see attraction in Nea Fokea. Visitors can explore the tower's impressive architecture and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline. The adjacent Church of the Twelve Apostles, built in 1868, adds to the site's charm. The tower is particularly beautiful at night when it is illuminated.

Getting There
Car
If driving from Kassandra, head southeast on the main road (E90) towards Kassandra 630 77. After approximately 15 minutes, turn left onto the Unnamed Road and drive for about 5 minutes. Look for signs indicating Sant Paul's Byzantine Tower, which will be a short distance ahead on your right. Free parking is generally available near the site.
Public Transport
From Kassandra, take a local bus towards Nea Fokea. Check the local bus schedule for routes and stops near the Unnamed Road. The bus ride will take around 20-30 minutes. From the bus stop, walk approximately 10 minutes towards the tower. Bus fare is typically around €2 per person. Keep in mind that many of the smaller stations are “on demand”, which requires asking the driver to stop.
Walking
If staying in Nea Fokea, you can easily walk to Sant Paul's Byzantine Tower. From the center of Nea Fokea, head towards the coast and then turn onto the Unnamed Road. The walk to the tower takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Follow the path along the Unnamed Road, enjoying the scenic views of the area.
