Discover more about Bell Tower of the Annunziata Church

The Bell Tower of the Annunziata stands as a poignant reminder of Corfu's rich history. Located at the intersection of Evgeniou Voulgareos and Vrachlioti streets, it is the only part remaining of the Annunziata Church. The church, also known as the Catholic Church of Lotsiada, was built towards the end of the 14th century and dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lucia. Commissioned by the Neapolitan captain Petró Capece, the church marked the anniversary of the founding of the Venetian Republic. It held great significance, with many noble Latin heroes who died during the Battle of Nefpaktos in 1571 buried within its walls. Miguel de Cervantes, the famed author of Don Quixote, was also treated at the temple of Annunziata for injuries sustained during the same battle. Tragically, the church was bombed by the Germans in 1943 during World War II. In 1953, the decision was made to demolish the remaining structure, leaving only the bell tower. Today, the bell tower stands as a monument of pan-European importance, a testament to Corfu's Venetian past and a reminder of the island's resilience. Its towering shape and architectural details, recently restored, continue to captivate visitors.
