Dominating the northwestern side of Corfu Town, the New Fortress (Fortezza Nuova) is a remarkable Venetian structure built on St. Mark's Hill. Its construction, spanning from 1576 to 1645, followed the first great Ottoman siege of Corfu in 1537, highlighting the need to protect the town outside the old citadel. Designed by military engineer Ferrante Vitelli, the fortress showcases advanced fortification methods of the time. The fortress is divided into two levels, featuring bastions like Scarponas and Epta Anemoi, offering commanding views. The British later expanded the fortifications during their rule (1815-1863). Inside, a network of underground arcades, halls, and tunnels creates a cellular structure. The fortress has two baroque-styled gates, and its western side features a dry moat.Today, the New Fortress is a popular tourist attraction, hosting art exhibitions and cultural events. Visitors can explore its well-preserved architecture and enjoy panoramic views of Corfu Town and the sea. Naval facilities are also currently located within the fortress.
