Discover more about Guora gate

The Guora Gate, also known as Porta Guora or Megali Porta (Great Gate), is a historical landmark in Rethymno, Crete. Constructed between 1566 and 1568, during the rule of Venetian Rector Giacomo Guoro, the gate served as the main entrance to the Venetian-fortified city. The gate led to the central square, surrounded by important public buildings. Today, the Guora Gate stands as a testament to Rethymno's rich Venetian heritage. The arched gateway, approximately 2.6 meters wide, is crafted from carved stone, featuring a semi-circular arch. Originally, the gate had a cornice and pediment adorned with the emblem of Venice, the Lion of St. Mark. The relief is now preserved in two pieces in the courtyard of the Loggia. Walking through the gate, visitors enter the charming Old Town, with its narrow streets, shops, tavernas, and historical sites. The Guora Gate offers an immersive experience into the historical charm of Rethymno.
