Discover more about The Athenian Treasury

The Athenian Treasury stands as one of the most impressive structures within the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. City-states throughout ancient Greece erected treasuries in Delphi to honor the gods and display their wealth and influence. The Athenian Treasury, positioned along the Sacred Way, ensured that visitors ascending to the Temple of Apollo would readily see Athens' dedications and architectural prowess.Constructed around the early 5th century BCE, possibly after the Battle of Marathon, the treasury was a symbol of Athenian democracy and their triumph over the Persians. Pausanias, the ancient writer, claimed the treasury was financed by spoils from the Battle of Marathon. The building's Doric design features Parian marble, with a frieze depicting the adventures of Hercules and Theseus. Inside, inscriptions detailed political decrees and hymns to Apollo. The treasury housed war trophies and items offered to the temple. The sculptures adorning the treasury showcased Athenian identity and their view of enemies. The treasury has been reconstructed and what stands today is thanks to the French Archaeological Institute in 1906.
