Discover more about Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the Greek gods, is a majestic mountain that dominates the landscape of northern Greece. Rising to a height of 2,917 meters (9,570 feet) at its highest peak, Mytikas, it is the tallest mountain in Greece and the second tallest in the Balkans. Its imposing presence and rich mythology have captivated visitors for centuries. The mountain is located on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia, easily accessible from the town of Litochoro. Mount Olympus National Park, established in 1938, was the first national park in Greece and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, protecting its diverse ecosystems. The park is home to over 1,700 plant species, many of which are endemic, as well as a variety of animal species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles. For experienced mountaineers, hiking to the summit of Mount Olympus is a challenging but rewarding experience. The most popular route, the E4 trail, starts from Prionia and takes approximately 6-8 hours to reach the summit of Mytikas. The final ascent to the peak involves a Class III rock scramble, requiring a good level of fitness and a head for heights. For those who prefer a less challenging hike, there are several easier trails that explore the lower slopes and scenic gorges of the mountain. Whether you're drawn by the mythology, the natural beauty, or the challenge of the climb, Mount Olympus offers an unforgettable experience. Explore the foothills by car or mountain bike, discover hidden corners and towering trees, and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of this iconic landmark. Note that climbing Mount Olympus is best done from June 1 to October 1, as snow and bad weather make it treacherous outside of these times.
