Discover more about Archaeological Museum of Dion

The Archaeological Museum of Dion, established in 1983, stands a short walk from the Archaeological Park of Dion, safeguarding artifacts unearthed from the ancient city and surrounding Pieria region. Dion, once the religious hub of the Macedonian kingdom dedicated to Olympian Zeus, thrived from the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD. Alexander the Great even made sacrifices here before his military campaigns. The museum's collection includes votive sculptures, statues, grave monuments, coins, and various objects discovered within Dion's necropolis, sanctuaries, and baths. Exhibits are organized by their discovery location, offering a glimpse into the city center, public buildings, and sanctuaries. The basement displays items related to daily life in ancient Dion, including pottery, tools, and construction materials. One of the museum's highlights is the hydraulis, a 2nd-century AD hydraulic organ. This unique instrument, the oldest of its kind found in Greece, showcases the advanced technology of the time. Other notable displays include statues of Dionysos, Isis, and Aphrodite Hypolympidia. The museum also features a room for educational activities, where visitors can watch a multilingual video about the history of the Dion excavations.
