Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou: A Spiritual Haven on Mount Athos

The Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus, is one of the twenty monasteries on the Mount Athos peninsula in Greece. Situated near Karyes, the capital of the Monastic State, it holds the sixth position in the Athonite hierarchy. The monastery's origins trace back to the 11th century, with documented existence by 1169. Tradition suggests its founding by a Christianized Seljuk Turk named Koutloumous.Throughout its history, Koutloumousiou has faced numerous challenges, including pirate raids, fires, and landslides, but has consistently been rebuilt and renovated. Generous endowments and restorations by princes along the Danube in the 14th century significantly contributed to its growth. The chapel of the Dreadful Presentation, constructed in 1733, houses a miraculous icon depicting a child Jesus seeking comfort from the Virgin Mary. Koutloumousiou's library preserves 662 manuscripts and approximately 3,500 printed books, holding significant historical and theological value.
