Discover more about Simonos Petras Monastery

Simonos Petras Monastery, also known as Simonos Petra, is an architectural marvel clinging to the southwestern side of Mount Athos in Greece. Founded in 1257 by the hermit Saint Simon, the monastery is perched on a steep rock, 333 meters (1,092 feet) above the Aegean Sea. This seven-story structure appears to float between earth and sky, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a unique spiritual atmosphere. The monastery's history is marked by both spiritual devotion and devastating fires. It was significantly expanded in 1364 with the financial support of the Serbian ruler John Ugljesa. Over the centuries, Simonos Petras has been ravaged by fires in 1580, 1622, and 1891, which destroyed significant portions of its library and Katholikon (main church). Despite these setbacks, the monks have consistently rebuilt the monastery, showcasing their resilience and unwavering faith. The Katholikon, dedicated to the Nativity of Christ, has been rebuilt several times, most recently after the 1891 fire. Inside the monastery, you'll find several chapels, including those dedicated to Saint George, Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint Haralambos, and the Archangels. The monastery is also renowned for its exceptional choir, considered one of the finest on Mount Athos, preserving the tradition of Byzantine chant and liturgical music. A significant relic housed within the monastery is the left hand of Saint Mary Magdalene, which is said to sometimes have the temperature of a human hand. Today, Simonos Petras Monastery continues to be a vibrant center of Orthodox monasticism, welcoming male pilgrims from around the world. Its stunning location, architectural grandeur, and spiritual significance make it a must-see destination on Mount Athos.
