Afentis Christos Islet: A Sanctuary by the Sea

Afentis Christos, also known as 'Lord Christ', is a captivating islet located just off the northern coast of Crete, near Malia. This tiny island, spanning approximately 4,400 square meters, is most famous for its picturesque white chapel, the Church of Metamorphosis tou Sotiros (Transfiguration of the Savior). The exact date of the church's construction is unknown, but it stands as a beautiful testament to Cretan religious heritage.The islet has a rich history, with remnants of Venetian barracks and a Minoan cemetery featuring carved graves on the rocks. According to local tradition, a spring near the church was believed to help women conceive. Interestingly, the islet's formation is relatively recent; it wasn't recorded on maps before 1618 and is believed to have been created around 1650 due to seismic activity from the Thira volcano. Every year on August 6th, a large religious feast is held at the chapel, drawing many people from Malia and the surrounding areas.Today, visitors can easily reach Afentis Christos by swimming from Malia beach or taking a short boat trip. The island offers stunning views, especially during sunset, making it a popular spot for photographers and those seeking a tranquil escape.
