    Discover more about Armenistis Lighthouse

The Armenistis Lighthouse, also known as Faros Armenistis, stands as a proud symbol of Mykonos' rich maritime history. Located 6.5 kilometers from Mykonos Town in the Fanari area, the lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the neighboring island of Tinos.Built in 1891, the lighthouse was erected in response to the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887, a tragedy that claimed the lives of 11 people. The 19-meter tall tower was constructed to guide ships safely through the treacherous waters. The original lighting mechanism, a French-made Fresnel lens, even won an award at the International Exhibition in Paris. This mechanism remained in use until 1983 and is now on display at the Aegean Maritime Museum in Mykonos Town. While visitors cannot enter the lighthouse, the surrounding area provides a tranquil setting to appreciate the stunning views, especially during sunset. The location's rugged terrain also offers opportunities for hiking and exploration. According to local tradition, the area was called 'vourvoulakas' (vampire) to deter children from visiting the dangerous cliffs. Today, it attracts tourists seeking a glimpse into Mykonos' past and a peaceful escape from the island's vibrant party scene.
