Discover more about Archaeological Site of Kamiros

The Archaeological Site of Kamiros, located on the northwest coast of Rhodes, presents a captivating journey into the island's ancient past. Founded by the Dorians in the 8th century BC, Kamiros, along with Lindos and Ialyssos, formed a powerful triad of city-states. The city flourished from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, becoming a prominent commercial and agricultural center. Kamiros was built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Akramitis, offering stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The city was meticulously planned with distinct residential, commercial, and religious districts. Its advanced water management system, featuring underground cisterns and channels, allowed the city to thrive despite limited freshwater sources. However, Kamiros' prosperity was interrupted by devastating earthquakes in 226 BC and 142 BC. The city began to decline and was eventually abandoned. The ruins remained largely untouched until excavated by Italian archaeologists in the early 20th century, revealing remarkably well-preserved houses, public buildings, and temples. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this ancient city, including the agora (marketplace), the Temple of Athena Kameiras, a Doric temple, the Fountain Square, public baths with separate hot and cold rooms, and residential areas organized according to the Hippodamian system. The Acropolis, located at the highest point, offers panoramic views and houses the Sanctuary of Athena. Kamiros provides a tangible connection to ancient Greek urban life and architectural heritage.
