Discover more about Panagia Filerimos

Panagia Filerimos, situated on Filerimos Hill near Ialyssos, offers visitors a unique blend of history, religion, and natural beauty. The hill itself has been a significant site since ancient times, serving as the acropolis of Ialyssos and the location of a temple dedicated to Athena Polias. In the early Christian era, a basilica and cross-shaped baptistery were built. The site's main attraction is the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Knights of Saint John constructed the church in the 15th century, incorporating a Gothic style that distinguishes it from other Greek Orthodox churches. The church complex was later restored by Italian archaeologists. Inside the church, visitors can admire the architecture and a copy of the icon of Our Lady of Filerimos, a sacred relic with a storied past. Opposite the monastery entrance lies the "Via Dolorosa," a path leading to a giant cross. This route, created during the Italian occupation, features engravings depicting the Passion of Christ. Climbing to the top of the cross rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the island, including the airport, nearby villages, and the Turkish coast. Other notable features include the underground Church of St. George, adorned with rare frescoes, and the remains of a Doric fountain dating back to the 4th century BC. Peacocks roam freely throughout the site, adding to its charm.
