Mount Attavyros: Rhodes' Highest Peak
Conquer Rhodes' highest peak for breathtaking views and a journey through ancient history. Discover the Temple of Zeus and island panoramas.
Mount Attavyros, also known as Atavyros or Atabyron, is the highest mountain on the island of Rhodes, rising to 1,215 meters. Located south of the village of Embonas, it's a prominent landmark visible from many parts of the island. The mountain's slopes are covered in forests of pine and cypress trees, as well as maquis shrubland. The area is a Natura 2000 special area of conservation, home to the Rhodes deer (Dama dama), the Rhodes badger, and various bird species. Keep an eye out for the rare Paeonia Rhodia and several orchid species. At the summit, you'll find the ruins of a Temple of Zeus Atabyrios, said to have been founded by Althaemenes, who chose the spot because it was supposedly the only place on Rhodes where he could see his homeland of Crete. While the temple remains are modest, the panoramic views are breathtaking, encompassing the entire island, nearby Halki, and other Dodecanese islands. The hike to the summit is demanding, typically taking around 5 hours. The trail is steep and rocky, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential. Avoid hiking on hot days or when the ground is wet.
