Mount Attavyros: Rhodes' Highest Peak
Conquer Rhodes' highest peak, Mount Attavyros, for breathtaking views, ancient ruins, and a unique escape into the island's natural heartland.
Mount Attavyros, rising 1,215 meters (3,990 feet) above sea level, is the highest mountain on Rhodes. This imposing peak is more than just a geographical landmark; it's a symbol of the island, visible from many of the surrounding villages. The mountain's slopes are covered in diverse flora and fauna, with significant plant species and a large forest of cypress trees. Animal species include the Dama Dama deer, which symbolizes the island. The ascent to the summit is a rewarding experience for hikers. The trails, though challenging, offer panoramic views that stretch across the Aegean Sea to nearby islands like Halki. At the summit, you'll discover the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Zeus, adding a touch of mythology and history to the natural beauty. According to Greek mythology, the temple was built by Althaemenes, who believed it was the closest point on the island to the gods. While the hike can be demanding, the breathtaking 360-degree views from the top make it worthwhile. On clear days, you can see as far as Crete. The mountain's rugged landscape and the sense of tranquility offer a unique contrast to the bustling beaches and towns of Rhodes.
