Discover more about Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh

Located in the heart of Rhodes Old Town, the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh is a powerful reminder of the island's layered past. Constructed in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller, also known as Panagia tou Kastrou, it was one of the largest and most important Catholic churches on the island, serving as a central place of worship. Its location in the eastern part of the medieval city highlights its importance in the religious and civic life of the time. The church's architecture showcases Gothic elements, including pointed arches and ribbed vaults. Originally, the church featured three aisles, stained-glass windows, and stone-carved details. After the Ottoman Empire took over in 1522, the church fell into disrepair. The most damage occurred during World War II, when bombings destroyed parts of the Old Town. Today, the ruins consist of massive stone walls and towering Gothic arches. The site serves as a cultural monument, occasionally hosting exhibitions and concerts. Wandering through the ruins offers a glimpse into the island's medieval history. The name “Burgh” comes from the bourgeois inhabitants of this part of the town.
