Discover more about Evreon Martyron (Jewish Martyrs Square)

Evreon Martyron, also known as Jewish Martyrs Square, is a significant historical site in Rhodes Town, Greece, serving as a memorial to the Jewish community of Rhodes, especially those who were deported and killed during the Holocaust. Before World War II, Rhodes had a thriving Jewish community dating back centuries. In July 1944, the Nazis deported over 1,600 Jews from Rhodes and the nearby island of Kos to Auschwitz, where most were murdered. Only a small number survived. The square is located in the eastern section of the Old Town, within the historic Jewish quarter, once known as “La Juderia”. This area was once a vibrant center of Jewish life, with homes and shops. During World War II, the area was bombed, and the square was later established as a place of remembrance. The square features a Holocaust Memorial, dedicated on June 23, 2002, in memory of the victims from Rhodes and Kos. The memorial bears inscriptions in six languages, including Hebrew, Greek, and English. A fountain adorned with three seahorses stands in the square, replacing an earlier fountain destroyed during the war. Today, Evreon Martyron is a place for reflection and remembrance, honoring the resilience of the Jewish community. It also serves as a gathering point for events and ceremonies that celebrate Jewish culture and history. The square is easily accessible and provides a serene environment for visitors to contemplate the history and stories of the Jewish people of Rhodes.
