Discover more about Medieval City of Rhodes

The Medieval City of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988, stands as one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Europe. Located on the island of Rhodes, Greece, this historical marvel offers a captivating journey through time, showcasing a unique blend of architectural styles and cultural influences. Founded in 408 BC, the city flourished as a trading center during the Byzantine era. However, its golden age arrived with the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, who occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523. These warrior monks transformed the city into an impregnable stronghold, fortifying it with impressive walls and defensive structures. The city withstood numerous attacks, including formidable sieges by the Sultan of Egypt in 1444 and Mehmet II in 1480, before finally succumbing to Suleyman II in 1522. Today, the Medieval City of Rhodes invites visitors to explore its enchanting labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets, lined with historical monuments, Byzantine churches, mosques, and Renaissance-era fountains. Key landmarks include the Palace of the Grand Master, a stunning castle reflecting the island's history and Gothic architecture , and the Street of the Knights, a remarkably preserved medieval thoroughfare. The city is divided into the Upper Town (or Collachium), once the Knight's quarter, and the Lower Town, featuring a mix of Gothic and Ottoman architecture. Walking through the city, one can admire the imposing fortifications, including the 4 km-long wall with its several gates. The atmosphere is vibrant, with tavernas, restaurants, and shops catering to tourists. The city's rich history extends beyond the Knights, with Ottoman-era mosques and bathhouses adding to its cultural tapestry. The Archaeological Museum, housed in the former Knights' Hospital, offers insights into the city's past.
