Discover more about Ancient Thera, admission building

Ancient Thera, located on the island of Santorini, is an archaeological site that dates back to the 9th century BC. The city was founded by Dorian colonists from Sparta, led by Theras, who gave the city and island its name. Situated on the Mesa Vouno mountain, between the villages of Kamari and Perissa, Ancient Thera held a strategic position that allowed it to control the southeastern Aegean Sea. Excavations, which began in 1896, have revealed ruins primarily from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Visitors can explore the remains of temples dedicated to various gods, public buildings, an agora (marketplace), private residences, and a well-developed road network. The Terrace of the Festivals is a notable site where men once danced naked in honor of Apollo. During the Hellenistic period, particularly in the 4th century BC, the city served as a naval base for the Macedonian Ptolemaic dynasty. The Romans later occupied the city, further contributing to its prosperity. In the Byzantine era, it provided refuge from Arabic invasions. Today, Ancient Thera offers not only a journey through history but also stunning panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and surrounding islands.
