Discover more about Profitis Ilias Church

The Profitis Ilias Monastery, located on the summit of Mount Profitis Ilias, stands as one of Santorini's most iconic landmarks. At 567 meters (1,860 feet) above sea level, the monastery offers unparalleled 360-degree views of the entire island, from Oia to Akrotiri, and the Aegean Sea. Founded in 1711 by two monks, Joachim and Gabriel, the monastery resembles a fortress, a design choice made to protect against pirate attacks. For over a century, it served as a vital educational, cultural, and economic center for Santorini. The monastery operated a school that preserved Greek language and literature during Ottoman rule and maintained a ship for trade across the Aegean and Mediterranean. The profits from these ventures funded numerous charities and supported the local community. While the monastery lacks the iconic blue-domed churches Santorini is known for, its historical significance and panoramic vistas make it a must-see. Visitors can explore the chapel, admire the architecture, and visit the small shop selling traditional products made by the monks, such as olive oil and wine. The monastery also holds religious ceremonies and festivals, particularly on the feast day of Prophet Elias (July 20th), drawing locals and visitors alike. Though parts of the monastery suffered damage in the 1956 earthquake, restoration efforts have reinstated its former prestige.
