Discover more about Castle of Oia

The Castle of Oia, also known as the Castle of Saint Nikolas, stands as a testament to Santorini's rich history and stunning natural beauty. Built in the 15th century by the Venetians to protect the island from pirate invasions, the castle served as a strategic lookout point. Constructed from volcanic stones and lava bricks, the castle once housed noble Venetian residences, churches, and warehouses. The inhabitants built their homes close to each other, with doors and windows facing inward, creating a defensive wall. Although much of the fortress was destroyed by earthquakes, particularly in 1956, its ruins still exude majesty and mystery. Today, the Castle of Oia is one of Santorini's most iconic sites, attracting visitors from around the globe. It offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, the caldera, and neighboring islands. The castle is particularly famous for its breathtaking sunset views, drawing crowds each evening to witness the colorful descent of the sun into the shimmering waters. Visitors can explore the remnants of the castle, including the partially intact Goulas (watchtower) and a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nikolaos, carved into the volcanic rock.
