Discover more about Archaeological Site of Kamiros

The Archaeological Site of Kamiros, located on the northwest coast of Rhodes, presents a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore a remarkably complete ancient city. Founded by the Dorians in the 10th century BC, Kamiros, along with Lindos and Ialyssos, formed a powerful triad of city-states on the island. The city thrived from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, known for its agriculture, ceramics, and trade. Kamiros is built amphitheatrically on three levels. At the highest point lies the Acropolis, which once housed the Sanctuary of Athena. The main settlement, with its residential area, is found on the middle terrace, showcasing the Hippodamian system of urban planning with parallel streets and organized blocks. The lower level features a Doric temple of Apollo and the Agora, the city's civic and commercial center. The city was destroyed by earthquakes in 226 BC and 142 BC, and eventually abandoned. Rediscovered in 1859, systematic excavations by the Italian Archaeological School in the early 20th century revealed the city's layout and offered insights into daily life in a Hellenistic city. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of houses with advanced water management systems, public baths with hot and cold rooms, and the remains of temples and public squares. Artifacts from Kamiros are now housed in museums across Europe, including the British Museum and the Louvre.
