Discover more about Carved Graves Sedoukia

The Sedoukia Carved Graves, located on the slopes of Mount Karya in Skopelos, are a fascinating archaeological site shrouded in mystery. These four larnax-like tombs are carved directly into the limestone rock. Believed to date back to Roman or early Christian times, the graves were found empty, leading to speculation about looting or their intended purpose. Two of the graves are parallel to each other, with a third, unfinished tomb nearby, and a fourth located a couple of meters away. The completed graves once had 2.5-meter-long monolithic lids. The precision of the carvings is impressive, leading some to wonder if they were created with tools beyond the era to which they are dated. Legends of hidden treasures and pirate activity add to the intrigue. One story tells of the Turkish admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa hiding gold in the tombs. Whether these tales are true, the site offers a unique experience for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Reaching the graves involves a drive along a dirt road, followed by a walk along a wooded path. The panoramic views from the site are magnificent, encompassing Alonissos, Skiathos, Pelion, and even Halkidiki and Mount Olympus on a clear day. Visitors report a sense of peace and connection to the land while exploring the site. The serene setting provides a welcome escape from the busier tourist spots. Comfortable footwear is recommended due to the uneven terrain.
