The Folklife & Ethnological Museum of Macedonia & Thrace, founded in 1973, is located within the stunning Villa Giacomo Modiano, also known as the Old Government House. Built in 1906 by architect Eli Modiano, the villa itself is an architectural gem, featuring an eclectic style with Art Nouveau influences. The museum's location is on a 5-hectare plot of land by the sea. The museum's four levels house a collection of approximately 15,000 objects, including woven textiles, embroidery, local costumes, tools, weapons, domestic articles, musical instruments, and equipment for woodcarving, woodworking, and metalworking. The permanent exhibitions focus on basic aspects of human society, such as food, shelter, and clothing, aiming to familiarize visitors with the traditions of the recent past. Exhibits like 'At the Watermills of Macedonia and Thrace' explore pre-industrial technology and the use of water as an energy source. Another significant exhibition, 'Macedonia-Thrace: Traditional Costumes, 1860-1960', displays 55 costumes from Macedonia and Thrace, highlighting the intricate designs and regional variations. The museum also has a specialized library, a photographic archive, a record library, and a sound library.
