Discover more about Holy Church of Saint Demetrius, Patron Saint of Thessalonica

The Holy Church of Saint Demetrius is a testament to Thessaloniki's rich history and religious significance. The first church on this site was built in the early 4th century, replacing a Roman bath where Saint Demetrius, a Roman officer who converted to Christianity, was imprisoned and martyred in 306 AD. A larger, three-aisled basilica was erected a century later, followed by a five-aisled basilica in 629-634 after repeated fires. This is the form that largely survives today. During the Ottoman era, the church was converted into a mosque in 1493 and was known as the Kasımiye Camii. After Thessaloniki's liberation in 1912 during the First Balkan War, it was reconsecrated as a Christian church. A devastating fire in 1917 destroyed much of the structure, but it was meticulously rebuilt according to the original plans and reopened in 1949. The church is renowned for its stunning Byzantine mosaics, which depict Saint Demetrius with children and officials responsible for the church's restoration. The crypt, located beneath the church, is believed to be the site of Saint Demetrius' martyrdom and houses ancient relics and a fountain that was converted into a source of holy water. The crypt also displays artifacts that survived the 5th-century fire, including sculptures and decorative items. Today, the Holy Church of Saint Demetrius is a major pilgrimage site and a symbol of Thessaloniki. Visitors can explore the historical architecture, admire the vibrant frescoes, and descend into the crypt to experience the sacred atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The feast day of Saint Demetrius, October 26th, is celebrated with a grand parade and Mass, coinciding with the anniversary of Thessaloniki's liberation.
