Discover more about The Umbrellas Sculpture by Zongolopoulos

The Umbrellas sculpture is a captivating and iconic landmark located along Thessaloniki's Nea Paralia waterfront. Created by the esteemed Greek sculptor George Zongolopoulos, the installation was unveiled in 1997, coinciding with Thessaloniki's designation as the Cultural Capital of Europe. The sculpture has since become a symbol of the city's modern artistic spirit and cultural richness. The artwork consists of 21 large umbrella-like structures crafted from stainless steel. Each umbrella stands approximately 13 meters (42 feet) tall and is slightly tilted, adding to the sculpture's whimsical and dynamic appearance. During the day, the stainless steel reflects the colors of the sky and sea, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. At night, the sculpture is illuminated, casting a magical glow along the waterfront. Zongolopoulos, who lived to be 101 years old, was known as the 'eternal teenager' and incorporated movement into his sculptures to harmonize with their surroundings. The umbrella motif, which he began exploring in the 1980s, is thought to symbolize protection and hope. Over the years, The Umbrellas has evolved into a canvas for social commentary, such as being lit in pink for breast cancer awareness, and a symbol of communal identity for the residents of Thessaloniki.
