Discover more about Rotunda

The Rotunda of Thessaloniki, a monumental cylindrical structure, stands as a powerful symbol of the city's layered past. Constructed around 306 AD by Roman Emperor Galerius as part of his imperial complex, its original purpose remains debated, with theories suggesting it was intended as a pagan temple dedicated to Zeus or the Kabeiroi, or as Galerius's own mausoleum. Its design, featuring walls over 6 meters thick and a large dome, showcases the engineering prowess of the Roman era. In the late 4th century, the Rotunda transitioned into a Christian church, dedicated to Agios Georgios (Saint George). This conversion led to significant architectural modifications and the addition of stunning mosaics, which are considered masterpieces of early Christian art. The mosaics depict religious and historical themes, with intricate patterns and vibrant colors that reflect the artistic brilliance of the Byzantine period. During the Ottoman rule in 1591, the Rotunda was converted into a mosque, known as the Mosque of Hortatz Effendi. A minaret, the only one remaining in Thessaloniki, and a fountain for ritual ablutions were added. After Thessaloniki's liberation in 1912, the Rotunda was reclaimed as a Christian site and eventually became a museum. Today, visitors can explore its rich history and admire the well-preserved mosaics, offering a glimpse into the city's cultural and religious evolution. The Rotunda is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its universal value and importance.
