Discover more about Theofilos Museum of Anakasia

The Theofilos Museum, located in the village of Anakasia, is situated in the beautifully preserved Kontos mansion, also known as the Hatzianastasi family residence. This three-story stone building, dating back to 1835, offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Theofilos Hatzimihail (1866-1934), a self-taught artist who wandered throughout Greece, often earning his keep by painting in cafes and homes. In 1912, Theofilos was commissioned to decorate the mansion by Giannis Kontos, a local miller who had purchased the home in 1905 and renovated it in a neoclassical style. The resulting murals, which adorn the hall and a large room on the top floor, are divided into two distinct zones. The lower zone features decorative themes inspired by nature and the animal kingdom, including flowers, birds, hunting scenes, and a portrait of Giannis Kontos himself on horseback. The upper zone showcases 14 large paintings inspired by the Greek Revolution, drawing inspiration from lithographs by Peter Von Hess. Visitors can also admire depictions of the Olympian gods and landscapes of the Pelion region. The museum provides a captivating glimpse into Theofilos' artistic vision and the cultural context of early 20th-century Greece. The building itself is a significant historical monument, being the only mansion in Pelion to retain a completely intact set of Theofilos' painted works. Despite earthquake damage in 1955, the murals have been meticulously preserved, and the mansion was declared a protected historical monument in 1962.
